Hello there! I’m Eric Liu, and I’m thrilled you’re here. My journey began far away in the lush vineyards of the Taiwanese countryside, where my childhood was filled with biking through neighborhoods, exploring nearby farms, and playing until the sun dipped below the horizon. Growing up in a vineyard meant my days were flavored with grapes, mischief, and the sort of freedom that comes from roaming the fields with friends.
A Twist of Fate and a Dance Floor
From our rural vineyard, I moved to Taichung, Taiwan’s second-largest city, for high school, where I dabbled in swimming and acting. Fast forward to university, and there I was, studying English Literatures at National Taiwan University. But something was missing. I found myself diving into rugby, gymnastics, swimming, and acting, which reignited my love for movement. It was gymnastics and acting that opened the door to the world of dance, specifically ballet.
My serious dance journey began with an unexpected twist: a stint as an exchange student in Iceland. I scoured Reykjavik for ballet classes to no avail until a friendly Icelandic classmate handed me a post-it note with a website scribbled on it. Unable to read Icelandic, I did what any resourceful student would do—I emailed the address I found on the site. To my surprise, I had contacted the National Ballet School of Iceland, and the school principal herself invited me over for a visit. One tour later, and I was hooked. Imagine my surprise when the principal offered me a spot at the school! It felt like all my passions—acting, swimming, gymnastics—were converging into one calling.
Chasing the Dance Dream (And Avoiding a Nine-to-Five)
After a transformative year of studying dance in Iceland, I returned to Taiwan. But before settling into a predictable career as an English teacher, I packed my backpack and embarked on a solo adventure across Europe. My goal? To explore the continent’s rich history, culture, and architecture. But as I roamed through 15 countries, something else called to me. Fellow travelers whom I met during the trip encouraged me to pursue my passion for dance. Their words resonated, and I returned to Taiwan with a renewed sense of purpose.
A year later, I was enrolled in Taipei National University of the Arts, majoring in Dance. I received the Wanderer’s Project Award from Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, which led me to Tel Aviv to study Gaga, a unique movement language developed by the Batsheva Dance Company. In 2016, my dance journey leaped across the ocean with a Fulbright grant, landing me in New York City. I trained at the Gelsey Kirkland Ballet Academy, the Joffrey Ballet School, and even performed with the American Ballet Theatre at the Metropolitan Opera House.
Discovering Pilates, Alexander Technique, and Personal Training
Like many late-blooming dancers, I encountered my fair share of challenges, including persistent lower back pain. Some teachers recommended Pilates for muscle activation and injury prevention, and soon, I was hooked, attending Pilates classes all over NYC. As I explored Pilates more deeply, it became evident that this practice could enhance not only my dance but overall body awareness and strength. The idea of becoming a teacher sprouted, and before long, I was training others.
When my back pain flared, I recalled the Alexander Technique from my ballet training. This approach, focusing on body alignment and ease of movement, resonated with me immediately. As I integrated these techniques, my passion for teaching blossomed, transforming my initial resistance into a profound appreciation for guiding others on their journeys.
